I am making a Stock which is a kind of tied cravatte for want of a better word. It is almost like a bow tie but 10 times as wide.

I have made a pattern from paper but am just at a loss to think which way to lay the pattern on the material. Should I lay it on along the length or across the width? I am sure that it should be along the length but just wanted to check it out before I do it.

Anyone a dressmaker here who can advise?

Hi Gail,

Haven't done any dressmaking for donkey's years, but I have an inkling that you should put it on the bias to make it hang right when it's tied.

Happy to be contradicted, but at least my reply might bring your post to someone else's attention.

I've just dug out an old stock to check and as far as I can tell it was manufactured by being cut straight along the length. Certainly the long "tails" don't have the "stretchiness" that being cut on the bias would give them.

Dohhhhh. What a dope I am... I should have looked at the one I used for the pattern... Rolling Eyes I can't believe I didn't think of that. I havent done any dressmaking or cut my own pattern for such a long time I think those brain cells died a long time ago.

You are right 2heads it is cut along the length. Stiffness is what I am after.

Thanks both of you for your replies
