If you are an AOL reader then you are probably NOT receiving your notification mails from us about topics in the forum. That's because I've noticed that AOL are bouncing your emails again!!! This means that they are returning the emails to us before you even get to see them.

I've contacted AOL about this but who knows how motivated they'll be to sort it out, particularly as I'm not even a customer of theirs. May I suggest that you AOL users email the the AOL postmaster (I think the address is postmaster@aol.com ) yourselves and request that TotalFrance mail be let through to you so that you don't miss your communiques.

I'll continue to do what i can from here but it's you customers who have the real power.

We've discovered from a couple of new members that some hotmail account users are not receiving their registration confirmation emails.

This seems to apply only to Hotmail users who have recently updated to the new version on Hotmail. Apparently the new version marks a lot of unknown mail as 'spam' or 'junk' and puts it straight into the 'junk' folder.

If you are registering here on Total France, please be aware of this and check your 'junk' folder.

Although we have had no reports of this on other webmail accounts, it's something that is maybe worth checking if you don't receive your confirmation email.

Monika

It depends what the hotmail users have set their spam settings at. I only receive in my inbox my addresees and who i have put in my safelist. So a new mail coming in goes to junk mail and as you say they need to check junk mail then save the address in thier safe list then in the future it will arrive in inbox.

If you are an AOL user you may like to read their new Terms Of Service. There has been a bit of an “uproar” and they have lost quite a few users recently – mainly because many did not like some new bits in the updated Terms Of Service (for example “You waive any right to privacy.”).

AOL seem to be back-tracking a bit and are calling it a linguistic “tidy-up”. They are also trying to confuse AIM TOS changes with their own TOS changes. I’m sure that many people are not terribly concerned if AOL should read their personal communications – what people don’t like is when AOL take the same attitude and totally disregard personal privacy. I guess it remains to be seen how far they will backtrack in relation to how many users they will lose.

Some BT users also report difficulty receiving confirmation mails.

God knows what BT does with them! The mails are not bouncing back here so I assume that BT is diverting them somewhere without the owner's permission.

If you are a BT user who is not receiving a confirmation email, please check ALL your folders, and also your spam settings to ensure that you are not blocking our mails automatically.

You might try 'white listing' Total France to signal to your ISP that you WANT to receive the confirmation mail.

My company in the UK runs quite a number of mailing lists mainly for Scout connected organisations. Every one of the members on the mailing list has asked to be there but AOL insists on bouncing any emails sent to AOL addresses. The message from AOL asks us to write to them by email or ring them. The former gets no reply and the later gets music. Even our ISP does not manage to get a reply.

Our advice to our list members is to move from AOL to an Internet Service Provider (AOL is not an ISP).

Maybe Total France should give the same advice.

CHRIS

Hi Chris

It's good advice, but probably easier to implement with list members who are part of a cohesive group. Francophiles tend to be wanderers at first, and if they alight on TF just in passing then they are unlikely to establish a new email provider just to register.

Once registered however, then many do change problematic addresses in order to maintain the flow of notification emails.

The problem is that initial use of certain email providers may mean they never get registered to begin with Very Happy

Have these people tried following AOL advice ..... to add the e-mail addresses of such sites to their address book? It might work.

AOL seems to have really taken to heart the spam issue and following an all-party committee on spam etc a few years ago they seemed to go OTT with restrictions which blocked genuine e-mail.

I'm using AOL9 for personal and work use and haven't had a problem for a long time - though when I did it was an absolute PITA. However, if AOL spots 'excessive' e-mail from a source to those who don't have the sender's address in their address book, they seem to block it. Likewise lots of e-mail to one address - I have another address at another location and connected up to it and forwarded around 20 e-mails to an AOL address. AOL then blocked the sender from sending e-mail to any AOL addresses!! They weren't happy and I was told that AOL would have cleared the block if they'd requested it but instead they switched to another provider.

I think there was some sort of central system which AOL and others subscribed to which blocked what were considered to be dodgy addreses.

AOL seems to be incredibly concious of possible abuse and so seems to protect us ..... quite often from genuine e-mail. But so many kids use AOL that perhaps the protection is justified? I don't know ...... but I have added all the addresses of subscriber sites to my address book and (touch wood) don't seem to have a problem.

(Fingers crossed!)

TM

Yes and sadly it doesn't work, or rather hasn't for them. They have also emailed AOL and got no reply.

To be fair to AOL there are quite a few good points about their system but their failure to respond to customer questions is not good.

I am an AOL user and am receivig topic reply notifications promptly and do not have a problem.
I did receive notification of changes/upgrading but it hasn't caused me any problems.
I'll try and confirm this with this and other posts.
