We only visit our maison secondaire in the Auvergne at the most 6 times a year but need to use the internet..We have a landline with France Telecom but to have broadband it would cost at least 25 euros a month which is silly because we are hardly every there. Our mobile signals are almost non-existent (Orange & Vodaphone) but at least 3 others in this tiny village have broadband. I have recently heard that we can purchase this plug-in gizmo called a dongle (£30) that we can top up like a mobile and use it on our laptop wherever we are. Any thoughts, experience or advice on this please. Our house is halfway up the Livradois Forest near Sauxillange.

Thanks for info but we were told that the lack ofmobile signal did not matter, the dongle used the wireless signal !!!! Are we being told porkies by the people who want to sell this gizmo to us? Denise Wink

The salesman is confused (or trying to be confusing ... Wink)

I suppose you could say that a dongle uses a wireless signal, but to most the term "wireless" has to do with wifi. Your laptop probably already has a wireless receiver built-in (depends on its age, of course, and spec).

A dongle, on the other hand, uses the cellphone (mobile phone) network, so how well your dongle does depends on how good a mobile signal you get.

If you can get broadband with Orange, you can choose to stop the broadband and phone line when you are not there
see here:

there are some conditions of course...
you may find that this works out cheaper than the dongle which is very expensive and if you go over your download limits you pay dearly...
